Giro del Parco, Italy        September 12-19, 2019

Giro del Parco- 5 Day Trail Run in the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise

Sept 12-19th 2019

Trip Itinerary:  Our first day on the trail will be on Friday Sept 13th.  We will meet up the day before (Thursday Sept 12th).  It seems like most people prefer spending a few days in Rome prior to the trip, so instead of backtracking from Rome to the Rome airport and then driving east we will meet in the town of Sulmona.  I will arrange train tickets for everyone from Termini train station in Rome to Sulmona where Cole Watson and I will meet you at the train station.  The train ride will be about 2.5 hours long from Rome to Sulmona and from there the drive to our hotel in Lago di Barrea will be around 1.5 hours.  This itinerary is subject to change but these dates will not.

Thursday Sept 12th:  Morning train ride from Rome Termini to Sulmona. Group meet up and lunch in Sulmona.  Van transfer to Lago di Barrea.  Hotel stay with trip kickoff and group dinner.

Friday Sept 13th:  Leg 1 of the Giro del Parco.  Pre run breakfast at the hotel.  Prepare non essential running gear for transfer to next lodging.   Route from Lago di Barrea to Pizzone (25km).   Guest house stay and group dinner.

Saturday Sept 14th:  Leg 2.  Pre run breakfast at the guest house.  Prepare non essential running gear for transfer to next lodging.  Route from Pizzone to Picinisco (30km).  Bed and breakfast stay and group dinner at local pizzeria.

Sunday Sept 15th:  Leg 3.  Pre run breakfast at the BnB.  Prepare non essential running gear for transfer to next lodging. Route from Picinisco to San Donato val di Camino (25km).  Working farmhouse stay with group dinner at the farm.

Monday Sept 16th: Leg 4.  Pre run breakfast at the farm.  Prepare non essential running gear for transfer to next lodging.  Route from San Donato to Pescasserroli (20km).   Hotel stay and group dinner in the village.

Tuesday Sept 17th:  Leg 5.  Pre run breakfast at the hotel.  Prepare non essential running gear for transfer to next lodging.  Route from Pescasserroli to Villetta di Barrea (28km).  Hotel stay and group dinner in Villetta di Barrea.

Wednesday Sept 18th: Free day!  Breakfast at the hotel with a free day to explore the area.  Walk, run, kayak or just take it easy.  Dinner at local restaurant to close out the trip. Last night stay in Villetta di Barrea.

Thursday Sept 19th.   Breakfast in hotel (or on the road). Van transfer to Rome for flight home.  Please try to book flight home on the 19th at 11am or later to allow time for the 3 hour transfer to the Rome airport from Barrea.  Anyone staying on in Rome can catch a train in the airport back to Termini.  There are frequent direct trains from the airport to Termini station in Rome central.

Cost: Final costs will be available once I have completed all the reservations and the van rental.  A good ballpark estimate would be $1,700 before airfare.

What’s included in the trip costs?   All ground transportation, accomodations, breakfasts and dinners.   Plan on having money on hand for lunch stops (where available) and extras like drinks, coffee, gelato and shopping.

The trails:  All the trails on this trip will take place in one of Italy’s national parks.  The park is Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise.  Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise are 3 Regione (like States) that all come together in that area of the Apennine mountains. I have been on some of the trails in the park...but none of the trails we will travel on.  So this will be a new adventure for all of us.  The trails I have been on in this park were well signed and ranged from smooth to rugged.  I would anticipate plenty of hiking and maybe some bushwhacking as many of these trails might be low traffic.  If you would like a nice map of the area you can download the “Avenza Maps” app to your smartphone.  From there you can purchase the “Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo Lazio e Molise- Carta Escursionistica”.

Thanks for joining in on the Giro Del Parco.  Please let me know if you have any questions as we move forward with organizing the details of the trip.  I will get an update on price as soon as I have accommodations secure.  Looking forward to running with you all!

Hope to have you running with us in 2019!  Please contact Dirk at abruzzobiker@gmail.com with any questions.
